I've owned many different Apple products over the years including an iPad, MBP, iPhones, Apple Watch, etc. But I've never owned an iMac. After waiting for the refresh I've decided to make the switch from my every day 13' MBP to a desktop setup. Basically I'm curious what the better option would be for editing in Photoshop or other photo editing programs. I really like the features of the Magic Trackpad but I've never personally used one. How similar is it to my MBP trackpad?
What feels more comfortable to use and provides the greatest accuracy and control? The trackpad is great but its not perfect, and I find the mouse to be too clunky. Personally, with my left hand I use the trackpad for navigation around programs, swipe on safari, expose' and zoom and scroll, etc. With my right I use a Wacom tablet. This allows me to get the precision I need when I'm working in detail on photoshop, illustrator, or any program in the adobe suite. It takes a bit of getting used to, but my workflow is fast.
The downside is that my colleagues can't get their head around it and struggle to work my computer due to lack of a mouse. At the end of the day, its whatever works best for you. People seem to either love or hate Apple's mice and I think part of it depends on the size of your hands. If you have average sized or larger man hands it's probably not a good choice. A mouse that doesn't fit your hand isn't going to be comfortable and the Magic Mouse is on the smaller side. They make gloves in different sizes but for some reason assume everyone can/will use the same size mouse. I'm in the minority because I have smaller than average hands.

The Magic Mouse fits my hand just fine and I like the gestures on top. I bought both a Magic Trackpad and a Magic Mouse and then returned the mouse because I preferred the trackpad but I did like the mouse. I just found that I was using the trackpad much more than the mouse and figured no sense in having both. It's personal preference. If you have large hands the Magic Mouse may not be a good fit. It's on the smaller size and for a lot of people it can be uncomfortable. It fits my hand fine and I like it well enough.
As someone else stated Logitech makes great mice as well. So first thing is to decide if you would prefer a mouse or a trackpad. You might want to buy one of each and see which you prefer, then return the one you aren't going to use. Apple's trackpads are very accurate so you can definitely forego using a mouse if you would prefer a trackpad.
I couldn't imagine using a trackpad rather than a mouse until I bought a rMBP a few years back and now I can't imagine going back to using a mouse. I can be just as accurate with either one. The only time I'd say a mouse is really superior is with gaming.
